Mumbai has many accolades. The City of Dreams, The Financial Capital of India, The Home of Bollywood, The Fashion Capital of India and many more. Although the city is known as the icon of modernity and is at the forefront of innovation, it has a rich history and culture. Many iconic structures and locations in the city recount past events and the journey to where it stands today. Named after Mumba Devi, a celebrated Hindu goddess, the city has remnants of the rich colonial past in the many hidden locales of the city. The architectural marvels like Gateway of India, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (former Victoria Terminus), Mumbai Municipal Corporation Building, the Asiatic Society, and Elphinstone College are some among many others. Apart from these many regions within this large metropolis have their own unique stories etched in history. Here is a look at one of the lesser-known suburbs, Sewri and its historical charms.
1. Sewri Fort
This iconic monument is a witness to Mumbais colonial past. It was built in the 17th century by the British to serve as a strategic point of defence against foreign invaders. It served as a watch tower and first line of defence against the Portuguese who held land across the Mithi River. Exploring the architectural remains of this ancient structure is a unique experience while enjoying the cool sea breeze. The fort is surrounded by land on three sides while the fourth side cliff drops around 100 feet down into the sea and mangroves. It is perched on a hilltop surrounded by tall stone walls. The main buildings entrance is preceded by a foyer and an archway entrance. A sharp right turn leads into the main court which is situated deeper. This is a defence mechanism to stop the enemy from charging straight in so that they do not have a clear view of the court.
To the left of the center court, there are two underground vaults measuring about 60 feet by 20 feet. These were used for storage as they are around 20 feet tall in the center and lit by a single entrance. In between the halls is a flight of stairs that leads to a terrace that offers a spectacular view of the skyline.
Revamp
This iconic monument will soon undergo a makeover. The revamping plan includes a flamingo-viewing gallery atop the fort, repairs of external walls, external illumination of the fort, toilets, and parking lots. A garden with landscaping will further beautify the fort. The makeover is set to improve the attractiveness of this iconic monument attracting tourists and explorers interested in history and architecture.
2. Sewri Jetty
Before the Indian Independence, Sewri Jetty was the main port for trade used to export goods from the mainland. The port was then used by the Bombay Port Trust to regulate trade from the city. Today one can see many boats of local fishermen anchored at the bay. There are also ferry boats used to transport passengers to local spots within the city. The jetty is a major tourist attraction from October to January as it is a spot for watching the migratory flamingos. During monsoon, the jetty becomes a place of solitude where one can be disconnected from the chaos of Mumbai and enjoy the rains.
3. Flamingo Sanctuary
The Sewri Mud Flats are a serene expanse that transforms into a haven for migratory flamingos in December. Thousands of these graceful birds flock to the mud flats offering a mesmerizing experience to the visitors in winter. The pink color against the skyline is a visual treat contrasting nature and urban metropolis in the background. Presently, bird watchers and nature enthusiasts use the Sewri jetty to view the flamingos or walk through the muddy terrain to get photographs. But this is set to change after the makeover of the fort. A flamingo-viewing gallery is planned for nature enthusiasts for an unfettered view of the migratory birds.
4. Kosbad Temple
The Kosbad temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. It provides a tranquil retreat in a serene ambiance away from the hustle. Many festivities and occasions occur during December allowing visitors to witness the unique culture and tradition.
The silent and reclusive suburb of Sewri offers many unknown experiences of historical significance that tell their own stories about the city. Living in this quiet suburb can be a wholesome experience. The luxurious apartments in
The Canvas Residency by Shapoorji Pallonji combine the best experiences of modern living reminiscing the glorious past. These apartments in Sewri also enjoy excellent connectivity and social infrastructure and hence one of the top residential projects in Mumbai.
